The Nigerian Navy has arrested four men in Akwa-Ibom for smuggling in over 220 bags of rice.
The Navy disclosed that the men were arrested during their patrol around the Effiat waterways and the wooden boat the suspects used in carrying the bags of rice has also been seized.
This was made known by the Commanding Officer, FOB, Capt. Peter Yilme during the weekend.
One of the suspects, Godwin Nseyoh (29) who is a native of Mbo Local Government Area said, “I am a fisherman in Effiat community, I didn’t know that bringing in rice from Cameroon is wrong,”
Capt. Yilme who was represented by the Base Operations Officer, Lietenant Commander Kabiru Yusuf. said that Navy will ensure that smugglers are hunted down and as well eradicate completely illegal trade in the country.
Further reports said the Navy has handed over the suspects and the items to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
He said, “On behalf of the Commanding Officer, I am handing over 220 bags of suspected smuggled rice to the Nigeria Customs Service.”
Speaking during the handover, the Deputy Superintendent of NCS, Alabi, Adedokun said, “On behalf of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), I Alabi Adedokun take over the 4 defendants and 220 bags of foreign parboiled rice. On behalf of the Nigeria Customs Service, we thank you very much.”
