The Nigerian Senate has asked the Federal Government to provide a source of livelihood for beggars on the street.
The senate said creating a new policy or initiative to provide a source of livelihood for them will help lift beggars from the street and as well reduce the nuisance it constitutes.
The motion was sponsored by Senator Sankara Abdullahi, representing Jigawa North-west Senatorial district alongside 28 others during the Thursday plenary.
He said, “Notes with concern the exponential increase in the scourge of street begging and the nuisance it constitutes on the streets of major cities across the country. ”
The lawmaker also added that most people have used begging activity to perpetrate crime in the country.
He also said that it has become a corporate form due to the sympathy they get from the society.
