Border Closure: Items Worth N1.4 Billion Have Being Seized Since Partial Closure- Says Nigeria Custom Service

The Nigeria Custom Service, NCS, on Monday, said since the partial border closure, about N1.4 billion items have been seized by operatives of the ongoing Joint Border Security.

 

This was made known by the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, retired Col. Hammed Ali during a news conference with the Nigeria Immigration Service, Mr Mohammed Babandede in Abuja.

 

It was gathered that the Operation tagged ‘ Exercise Swift Response started on August 20th, 2019 with the aim to provide security to the country against trans-border security concerns, particularly the land and maritime borders.

 

Listing the items seized since the partial closure, Ali said about 21,071 of 50kg of per boiled foreign rice, 190 vehicles, 891 drums filled with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 2,665 jerrycans of vegetable oil have being seized.

 

Other items seized were 133 motorcycles, 70 jerricans of PMS, and 131 bags of NPK fertilizer.

 

The NCS boss added that insecurity challenge in the country has reduced since after the closure.

 

He further added that the commission have so far arrested 317 suspected smugglers and 146 illegal migrants.
