Immediate past governor and senator representing Imo West Senatorial District, Rochas Okorocha has faulted the bicameral legislature and recommended for one parliament to represent each state of the federation.
According to Daily Post Nigeria, Senator Okorocha said Senators can do what members of the House of Representatives are doing.
He added that the bicameral legislature is expensive to maintain, noting that the government is spending much on lawmakers.
Okorocha stated this while contributing to a Committee report on MTEF, at the Senate’s plenary on Thursday.
He said; “Mr. President of the Senate, distinguished colleagues, let’s tell ourselves the truth. Look at the number of House of Representatives members and Senators. ”
“To me, what is too important that a House member is doing that a Senator from the same state is not doing?”
“It is time for us to sacrifice and I want to say that a Senator is enough to represent a State in order to cut cost. We must do sacrifice for the nation. ”
The lawmaker further suggested that instead of spending money on capital expenditures, the government should concentrate on production that would yield revenue for the country.
In response to this, the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan said Senator Okorocha is free to sponsor a bill recommending one parliament.
He added that there is a provision for the practice of bicameral legislature in the constitution and the both chambers work hand in hands in making decisions that affects the country.
