Pupils treated after suspected gas leak at KZN school
AUSTERVILLE – Multiple pupils at Umbilo Secondary School in KwaZulu-Natal were evacuated following a suspected gas leak or unusual smell in the area.
Paramedics and emergency personnel are on the scene, treating some of the pupils.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said several children experienced breathing difficulties, while others were hyperventilating.
About 20 pupils and one teacher were assessed by paramedics.
Jamieson said six to eight pupils were transported to various hospitals for further treatment.
“I can’t confirm that it was a gas or chemical leak, as that will form part of an investigation,” he said.
