The Limpopo Province is once again experiencing heavy rainfall that has resulted in devastating floods, leaving a trail of destruction on roads infrastructure across parts of the Waterberg, Vhembe and Mopani Districts.

The department has dispatched teams of engineers from both the Department and Roads Agency Limpopo to assess the extent of the damage caused to road infrastructure in the affected districts.

Among the roads reported to have been impacted by the floods are the D972 outside Vaalwater and the D192 in Mokgalakwena, both located within the Waterberg District, the D3681 Tshikunda to Vhufufli in the Thulamela Municipality, D3830 at Mbhokota village outside Louis Trichardt in the Vhembe District, as well as some parts of Mopani District.

The MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure Ernest Rachoene has urged motorists and communities to exercise extreme caution during this period.

“Our teams working together with the disaster management teams of municipalities and sister departments, will be on the ground to assess the extent of the damages caused, as well as ensuring that we come up with both temporary and long-term solutions to the challenges we are faced with as a province.

We further advise all communities, road users in particular to avoid flooded roads and bridges during this period and that they must also prioritise their safety,” said MEC Rachoene.

The Department will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as assessments progress and when necessary, interventions will be implemented.

The department further pleads with communities to be patient as this also has a negative impact on #DikgerekgereWednesdays service delivery initiative.

“It is also important to highlight that this also affect our turnaround time in terms of the operations of #DikgerekgereWednesdays from our 36 cost centres as our heavy equipment won’t be able to move to some areas due to the wet weather conditions. In some areas already we received reports that our yellow fleet experienced challenges while trying to make sure that there is access to communities.

We remain committed to ensure that communities that are cut off from the rest of the world are reconnected.” adds MEC Rachoene.
