A recent video sharing platform capture is making waves as it shows a 3 guys stealing a mobile phone mounted on a tripod from a group of people on a street in Johannesburg. The brazen act occurred in daylight, with the thief speeding away in a white Toyota Corolla, license plate FX09 WH GP. This incident has raised eyebrows, especially due to the irony that the theft was recorded by the victim.

The video was shared by Yusuf Abramjee, a well-known anti-crime campaigner in South Africa and the founder of Crime Stoppers International’s local chapter. Abramjee frequently uses social media to highlight street-level crimes and advocate for more stringent policing in areas known for high crime rates.

Statistics from the South African Police Service (SAPS) indicate that cellphone thefts in the country average approximately 189 incidents per day. In the Gauteng province, which includes Johannesburg, over 70% of these thefts were recorded in 2025. Criminals are increasingly shifting their tactics, focusing less on reselling stolen devices and more on exploiting the banking applications on these phones for financial gain. This trend has alarmed law enforcement and community safety advocates alike, pushing for urgent intervention to address this disturbing rise in crime.
