Several senior leaders of the Democratic Alliance (DA) reportedly receive substantial financial top-ups to enhance their already generous government salaries, raising concerns about double standards within the party.

A confidential report signed by former federal finance chairperson Dr. Dion George reveals names of party leaders receiving additional financial support. The report details the “payments, or top-ups, currently paid by the party to any public representative.”

These leaders include outgoing DA leader John Steenhuisen, Deputy Finance Minister Ashor Sarupen, former Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink, and several others. Critics have highlighted this issue as the DA faces allegations of hypocrisy regarding financial contributions required from its leaders.

The controversy deepened when national spokesperson Karabo Khakhau was disqualified from running in the federal congress for failing to make a required monthly “tithe” payment. Although Khakhau settled her debt, critics like George have pointed out that the DA’s financial policies seem inconsistently applied.

The report outlines that Brink, who lost his mayoral salary after a no-confidence vote, now receives an additional R62,386 per month from the party. Sarupen also benefits from an additional R50,000 per month due to his role in the upcoming elections.

Steenhuisen, with a compensation package comparable to that of the deputy president, has access to additional benefits including a clothing allowance and a party credit card until it was revoked due to misuse.

Other leaders like Chris Pappas and Mathew Cuthbert have similarly requested top-ups to supplement their salaries under specific conditions.
