A devastating impact on the R33 has left one person deceased and four others injured following a violent head-on collision outside Pietermaritzburg.
?At approximately 21:30 last night, KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service responded to urgent reports of a severe motor vehicle collision on the R33 near New Hanover.
Upon arrival, first responders were met with a scene of absolute carnage involving two bakkies that had collided head-on at high speed. The force of the impact was so significant that it left the wreckage spanning both lanes, necessitating an immediate and complex multi-agency rescue operation.
?Paramedics rapidly triaged the scene and identified five occupants involved in the crash. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, one individual had sustained catastrophic injuries and was tragically declared deceased on the scene before any life-saving interventions could be performed.
?Of the remaining four survivors,
three patients were found to be in a serious condition, suffering from multiple fractures and significant head trauma.
?One patient sustained minor physical injuries but remained in a state of severe shock.
?The local Fire Department worked alongside paramedics to conduct intricate extrication maneuvers, as some occupants were heavily entrapped within the twisted metal of the bakkies. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Traffic Department were also in attendance to manage the scene and initiate a formal investigation into the cause of the collision.
?The R33 remained completely closed to traffic for approximately 90 minutes while emergency crews cleared the debris and authorities processed the scene. Once stabilized using advanced life support interventions, all four injured patients were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent specialized care.
?The exact cause of the accident is currently being investigated by SAPS.
