A video has emerged from a traffic stop in KwaZulu-Natal, where a female foreign national driver was suspected of drinking and driving. During the stop, she discreetly offered cash to the police officer. The recording, posted by anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee, shows this attempt around the 6-20 second mark.

The officer conducted a breathalyzer test, which registered a reading of 0.076, well below South Africa’s legal limit of 0.24. Despite the attempt to bribe the officer, the driver was released without charges, prompting criticism from the public and activists alike. Many are calling for stricter enforcement of laws regarding bribery under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.

Abramjee’s post has resulted in numerous replies demanding action against what they perceive as leniency towards foreign nationals amid South Africa’s ongoing debates surrounding immigration and corruption. The incident highlights growing frustration regarding roadblock operations in KwaZulu-Natal, where similar bribery attempts have increased.

In fact, there was a notable arrest on March 7, 2026, when a driver was caught offering a R500 bribe during a roadblock. This reflects a concerning trend in the country, as authorities reported that 51 motorists faced bribery charges during the festive season of 2025. Law enforcement officers continue to face challenges in proving bribery intent without explicit statements.
