A Pietermaritzburg family is preparing for the burial of a 34-year-old nurse who was stabbed to death on Sunday evening, allegedly by someone known to her.

Aleyka Shaik (34), who was pregnant with twins, was stabbed while she was fetching her seven-year-old daughter.

It is alleged that the incident occurred outside the suspect’s relative’s home in Northdale.

It is believed that the incident occurred just after 6 pm while she was placing her child in the vehicle.

Her family, who asked not to be named out of fear of victimisation, said they received a message around 6.30 pm about the incident.

She was fetching her child and as she was putting the child in the car, that’s when it happened. She had multiple stab wounds.

“We are also upset that we waited a while before her body was fetched,” said the family member.

When The Witness visited Shaik’s family members’ home, they were preparing for her burial.

The family member said they are devastated over the death.

“Her father and husband are preparing the funeral arrangements.

“They are distraught. She was a wonderful, helpful, caring, joyful person who also took care of her family.”

“Like her profession as a nurse, she was always willing to help people,” said the family member.

When The Witness visited the area where the incident occurred, neighbours said they heard about the incident and saw multiple vehicles parked in the vicinity.

Mountain Rise Saps Spokesperson Warrant Officer Panchael Singh confirmed a suspect has been arrested and a case of murder is being investigated.

Bombay Heights councillor Renisha Singh condemned the incident.

I am at a loss for words after what I witnessed last night. The depth of pain and sorrow carried by the affected families is simply unbearable to comprehend. A young mother, pregnant with twins, brutally taken in such a merciless and senseless act — it is difficult to imagine a greater injustice.

“I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the continued violence against women in our communities. This cannot be normalised, and it cannot be tolerated, “said Singh
