Conversations with neighbouring countries not effective
JOHANNESBURG – Some countries on South Africa’s border are not very helpful in keeping their nationals from illegally crossing into South Africa.
This is according to Border Management Authority Commissioner, Dr Michael Masiapato.
He was speaking from Komatipoort, Mpumalanga, at the border of South Africa and Mozambique.
He said despite continued conversations with his counterparts from neighbouring countries, the conversation is not very effective.
“This is primarily because when you look at issues of illegal migration, it is something that is affecting us more. And on that basis, there is not much traction or activism in dealing with this particular aspect.
“The issue is not necessarily even about Mozambique alone. We talk to Mozambique, we talk to Zimbabwe and we talk to Lesotho. Those are the three top countries in terms of generating illegal migration into South Africa.”
