141 cellphones found inside a prison! Correctional services raid Johannesburg prison after Inmate’s TV Interview

Correctional Services and police conducted a surprise raid at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre after a convicted fraudster gave a TV interview from inside his prison cell.

During the operation, officials confiscated 141 cellphones, illegal drugs, over R7 000 in cash, and other prohibited items. Authorities said the prison, which houses more than 12,000 inmates, has been experiencing increased movement of detainees to and from court, making it easier for contraband to be smuggled in.

The raid forms part of ongoing efforts to clean up correctional facilities and improve safety and security.

The interview, conducted without approval, has been strongly condemned by officials. It involved inmate Jermaine Prim, who made serious allegations against Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie, which McKenzie has denied, calling the claims false and defamatory.

Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said the interview violated standard procedures, as media access to inmates must be formally approved to protect security and legal processes.

Authorities have clarified that such raids are routine and not linked to any single incident, with similar operations expected to continue across the country.
