he lifeless body of 46-year-old Elana Brooke was discovered in Heathfield, Cape Town, on 23 March 2026.

Police initially responded to the scene believing it was a possible suicide. However, after further investigation, evidence of foul play emerged, and the case was reclassified as murder.
It is alleged that Elana was strangled. Authorities also indicated that there was an attempt to stage the scene to appear as a suicide.

Her boyfriend, Tristan Perez, was arrested and charged in connection with her murder.
On 9 April 2026, Perez was released from Pollsmoor Prison after being granted bail of R5,000. This decision came despite strong opposition from the State, as well as an affidavit from the accused stating that he had R25,000 available for bail.

The next court appearance in the matter is scheduled for 2 June 2026.

The case has raised serious concerns, particularly as it relates to gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa. Many have expressed outrage over the granting of bail, questioning the justice system’s response in cases involving violence against women.
