Two Zimbabwean nationals arrested for the smuggling of illicit tobacco products valued at approximately R6 million
Two Zimbabwean nationals, aged 40 and 28, are expected to appear before the Dennilton Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 23 April 2026, following their arrest for alleged involvement in the smuggling of illicit tobacco products valued at approximately R6 million.
The suspects were arrested on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, during an anti-smuggling operation conducted by members of the Provincial Tracking Team, in collaboration with Tshimollo Security and Investigations.
Police acted on intelligence received earlier regarding an 8-ton Fuso truck suspected to be transporting illicit hookah tobacco, commonly known as hubbly, from Zimbabwe to inland areas within the Sekhukhune District. The vehicle was subsequently intercepted along the R573 road within the Dennilton policing area.
Upon searching the truck, the members discovered a concealed false compartment containing 904 master boxes of illicit tobacco. Both occupants of the vehicle were immediately apprehended at the scene.
The suspects are facing charges of contravention of the Customs and Excise Act, 1964 (Act No. 91 of 1964), including the smuggling of illicit tobacco products.
The truck used in the commission of the crime was seized and will be subjected to forfeiture processes.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has commended the members for their vigilance and swift response in disrupting cross-border criminal activities.
Police investigations are ongoing, and more arrests cannot be ruled out.
