Two armed robbery suspects have been shot and killed during a fierce gun battle with KZN police in Pietermaritzburg.

The suspects were allegedly linked to a cash-in-transit robbery that took place in Verulam on Monday afternoon.

According to reports, members of the DPCI Provincial Tracking Team, together with South African Police Service (SAPS) PMB K9 Unit, Metro Police Special Operations Directorate, and private security partners, tracked the suspects to a hideout in the Edendale area within hours of the robbery.

When officers approached the premises, they allegedly came under heavy fire. A shootout ensued, resulting in two suspects being fatally wounded.

A third suspect, believed to have been injured, managed to escape during the exchange and is currently being sought by authorities.

Police confirmed the recovery of:
Two rifles
One revolver

A Toyota bakkie believed to have been used in multiple recent robberies
Investigations are ongoing as authorities continue the search for the remaining suspect.
