JOHANNESBURG  – As airline operations resume after Middle East-related disruptions, some international routes in and out of South Africa are returning to normal.

The regional conflict has entered its second week, sparked by joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran last weekend.

Fighting has since spread, with military sites and infrastructure targeted across several countries.

Travellers at OR Tambo International Airport said they are relieved that flights are moving again, even as airlines continue to monitor the situation.

A traveller from Colorado in the US said he was happy to be travelling directly from the US to SA.

“I thought we would avoid any disruptions and honestly there are worse places to be stuck so if we get stuck here a little bit that will be okay.”

“As a US citizen there’s a lot of shame knowing a lot of the pain we are in right now is being caused by my country. But with the systems in place to ensure our safety I feel secure in that way.”
