South African actor, presenter, director, comedian and entertainment star Soli Philander has died at the age of 65. The cause of his death is not yet known.

Philander’s most famous TV role was as presenter of the Afrikaans music quiz show “Liriekeraai” for several seasons, as well as the game show “Vat ‘n Kans”.

Minister of Sports, Art and Culture Gayton McKenzie has sent condolences to family and friends of the late comedian. McKenzie says Soli played an essential role in the South African democracy.

“For decades, Soli Philander brought laughter, insight and warmth to audiences everywhere in our country. His work as a comedian and storyteller drew deeply from the communities of the Cape Flats, giving voice to everyday experiences with wit, honesty and compassion. Artists like Soli play an essential role in our democracy.

They help us reflect on our society, find common ground, and remind us of our shared humanity. Through his charm and storytelling, Soli did it with grace and generosity every time. May his loved ones find comfort in knowing that his voice, his jokes and his stories will live on in the hearts of the many he entertained and inspired.”

The Minister praises his unique ability to use humour to reflect South African society and remind citizens of their shared humanity.
