Ekurhuleni firefighters are working to contain a fire that broke out at an auto spares shop in Edenvale.

Two fire service personnel sustained injuries during operations.

It is believed the fire started around 11:00 on Tuesday morning.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police have closed off Van Riebeeck Road in Edenvale, where motorists are being diverted away from the busy route.

Thick smoke could still be seen rising from the roof of the shop, which caved in earlier after the fire burned through it.

Ekurhuleni disaster and emergency management services spokesperson William Ntladi said that while private firefighters were attempting to assist with the blaze, a wall collapsed on them, injuring two individuals.

“They are suffering from lower body injuries due to the wall falling on top of them. We don’t know exactly the intensity of that, but they are in stable condition,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, the City of Ekurhuleni is urging Edenvale residents to steer clear of the building.

It said there is a chance the building could collapse further.

Ntaldi said the firefighters are still trying to contain part of the blaze at the back of the building.

“We don’t know what is the cause of the fire, but we can confirm that there is extensive damage to the structure.”
