The convoy of the Maphumulo Taxi Association owners and security guards were ambushed by a group of people this morning at 6.30 am in Stanger Manor.

According to one of the Maphumulo Taxi Association owners, Sfiso Zulu, they were travelling on Primrose Street on their way to the rank when the shootout ensued.

“We saw about 10 to 15 people working on the street. When we got closer they started shooting at us,” said Zulu.

The Maphumulo security guards, only known as Dube and Petros Mkhize were wounded and another Maphumulo taxi owner Ten Ten Ngiba died at the Stanger Hospital after being shot.

The three men were in a white Toyota Corola that belongs to one of the owners called Sipho “Magic” Thusi.

According to the owners of Maphumulo Taxi Association the motive of the shooting is due to the ongoing dispute over the Maphumulo and Doringkop route.

“That is all we are dying for, they want to kill us all so that they can take over our routes,” said Zulu.

One of the attackers was shot and killed where the ambush took place.

The other attackers fled the scene in a BMW that was later recovered in Darnall.

KwaZulu Natal SAPS spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said police have located a man who was admitted to a local hospital with gunshot wounds.

“We believe he could have been one of the shooters. Cases of attempted murder and murder will be opened at KwaDukuza SAPS for further investigation.

“We have called in re-enforcements from the surrounding police stations into the KwaDukuza area to assist in stabilising the area and to discourage further occurrences of this nature,” said Naicker.
