Ex SAPS’ elite Special Task Force accused of K!lling Marius van der Merwe
He’s accused of killing van der Merwe, who testified at the commission last year as Witness D.
It’s alleged that Sotheni shot Witness D outside his home in full view of his family shortly after he testified at the commission.
Sotheni is said to have resigned from the police service in 2019.
He then went to the private sector, and police investigations suggest he then worked for influential individuals who may have called the hit on Witness D’s life.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said it’s unfortunate that a former police officer has been arrested for van der Merwe’s murder.
“It is quite unfortunate that our tactical operators are being targeted by your private companies, by individuals who are wealthy to protect and guard them. We see today that they end up doing such heinous crimes.”
