A Mitchells Plain family has spoken about their hopes and fears related to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) deployment to gang-ravaged areas in Cape Town.About 200 troops assisted police during raids in the Tafelsig area of Mitchells Plain on Wednesday.

A Tafelsig mother of four, Wafeeqah Hendricks, said she’s had enough of the crime in the area.

“It’s just the crimes man… all the crimes… and robbery… the shootings.”

Hendricks’ mother-in-law, Joyce Neumann, said that the children suffer the most.”For our children… little, small ones have run around… it’s traumatising. We watch how they must run home from school and all that.”

Wafeeqah’s husband, Jeremy Neumann, said he hopes the SANDF troops operate within the law.

“To do their job within the law, but contain excessive force because if the people don’t want them here, it’s going to make their job difficult. You actually want the people to want them her, and then they can contain everything.”
