Concerted efforts by police to curb the influx of unlicensed firearms, illicit drugs and stolen goods into the province, yielded excellent results with the confiscation of unlicensed firearms, stolen property and a large quantity of cash as well as the arrest of five men on the N1 between Prince Albert in the Central Karoo and Paarl.

On Friday, 06 March 2026 at about 16:00 Garden Route and Central Karoo Crime Intelligence, Central Karoo Flying Squad and K9 members conducted an intelligence driven operation when the members pulled over a vehicle with three occupants at Prince Albert. A search ensued leading to the discovery of a 9mm pistol, imitation firearm, 48 rounds various calibre of ammunition and an undisclosed amount of cash. The police confiscated the items and arrested the trio.

Later the same day, 6 March 2026 at about 17:00, Breede River K9 also intercepted a vehicle at the entrance to Paarl. Upon searching the vehicle police found an undisclosed amount of cash on board. The two occupants were unable to account for the possession thereof and were subsequently arrested.

The suspects were travelling in two Toyota Starlett rental vehicles and are believed to have been enroute from the Eastern Cape to Cape Town at the time of their arrest. Both vehicles were seized.

It is further believed that the cash was stolen during robberies perpetrated earlier and the circumstances form part of an ongoing police investigation.

The five suspects aged between 38 and 50 remain in police custody. They will appear in the respective courts once charged. At this stage, they are facing charges of unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition as well as possession of suspected stolen property. More charges will be added as the investigations unfolds.

Western Cape police management lauded the members for their combined efforts which led to arrest of the perpetrators and recovery of the loot.
