KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will serve a second term after his contract was renewed.

His first term as the KZN top cop ends in March.

In July 2025, Mkhwanazi made explosive allegations about the political interference in police.

The claims have since been a subject of a commission of inquiry and a probe by Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee.

Following a month of speculation about Mkhwanazi’s future in the police service, it has now been confirmed that he will remain to the KZN top post.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli confirmed this during a crime-fighting event in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday afternoon.

“It has been renewed, the national commissioner has written to me, and I’ve also given a concurrence formally and officially, so I don’t think there is an issue with that.”

Under Mkhwanazi’s first term of office, KZN communities saw an intense fight against crime, including take down of dangerous murder, robbery, drug and cash-in-transit suspects.

The controversial Political Killing Task Team (PKTT) established under his leadership has been lauded for dealing the killing of politicians and traditional leaders.
