KZN school raided over illegal trucking claims
DURBAN – KZN Public Works MEC Martin Meyer has sounded the alarm over blatantly illegal activity at Havenpark Secondary School in Pheonix.
The school has been accused of illegally running a truck related logistics business on the premises. Last week, officials from the department were turned away after attempting to investigate multiple complains from concerned residents in the community.
During the raid, officials found the sports ground had been cemented over, apparently to accommodate a trucking logistics business operating onsite.
Meyer said two inspectors who were dispatched last week were denied access to do their “legal duty”.
He said the department, as a custodians and caretakers of all government properties within the province, was concerned about what was happening at the school.
“There’s an illegal structure there. We have a sports ground that has been tarred or cemented over. I’m not sure petrol standing open like that is within safety regulations.”
He said there were a few concerns that the department had a legal duty to investigate together with the department of Education
