A Lavender Hill resident has spoken out about living in a constant state of fear while being terrorised by local gangs. The Steenberg Police Station, which oversees the gang-ravaged area, held an imbizo in Lavender Hill on Thursday. The community meeting is part of ongoing efforts to curb gangsterism and address the rising violence in the region.

The urgency of the situation is reflected in the latest crime statistics, which list Lavender Hill among the 13 areas contributing to the highest number of gang-related murders in South Africa.

A local mother, who asked to remain anonymous for her safety, says that gangs have the entire community gripped in fear. Residents have been forced to implement their own “curfews,” locking their doors and staying indoors from as early as 6:00 PM daily.

“They knock on your door past one, past three [in the morning]. If you have cars, they want to take your car… or you must take them to go and shoot somewhere or transport this one to that side. And you can’t say no.”

The resident further highlighted the devastating impact on the younger generation, noting that teenagers in the area have been stripped of their independence and safety.”Our teenagers, they have no freedom at all. None, none… they can’t go nowhere,” she said.

Beyond the immediate threat of violence, the community is grappling with a breakdown in the relationship between citizens and the authorities.

The resident claims that many locals have lost trust in the police, who they believe are “in cahoots” with the gangs operating in the area.
