A 27-year-old woman has been sentenced to seven years in prison after setting her ex-boyfriend’s home on fire during a jealous outburst.

The Lephalale Magistrate’s Court found Merriam Tutjie guilty of deliberately torching the house in Steve Biko Phase 4, Villa Nora, leaving the property and everything inside badly damaged.

Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the investigation and prosecution, saying the sentence sends a clear warning that violence and destruction won’t be tolerated.

Police are calling on communities to handle relationship conflicts in a calm and lawful way, and to seek help instead of reacting in anger.

Is it ever worth it to let anger take control like this?
