Over 900 Illegal Immigrants Arrest in Gauteng

The multidisciplinary integrated teams of #OperationShanela conducted successful high-density operations for the weekend. The operation, which is conducted simultaneously throughout the five districts in the province, is aimed at enhancing police visibility and assist local police station with crime reduction.

The operations resulted in the arrest of more than 900 suspects for contravention of the Immigration Act, dealing in liquor without a license, possession of drugs, drinking in public, possession of hijacked vehicle including approximately 700 wanted suspects for serious and violent crime such as murder, robbery rape and sexual assault.

The teams further seized dangerous weapons, various drugs, liquor and a stolen vehicle. With liquor as the most contributor of crime in the province, the teams seeked to address the issue by closing down 21 liquor outlets for non-compliance and the owners were given fines as per Gauteng Liquor Act.

Through Operation Shanela, SAPS in Gauteng continue demonstrate its commitment to promoting safety while maximizing police visibility and stamping authority of the State.
