Smith initially claimed his wife had passed out from alcohol consumption and that he went to bed. The following morning, he allegedly found her lifeless body in the lounge. He then disposed of her body in a nearby field and later reported her as missing, sparking a police investigation.

Authorities uncovered inconsistencies in his account, leading to his arrest and prosecution.
