SARS needs to be protected
JOHANNESBURG – President Cyril Ramaphosa announced Dr Ngobani Johnstone Makhubu as the new SARS Commissioner, who will start on 1 May. This is as the current Commissioner, Edward Kieswetter’s, term ends on 30 April.
Speaking at a briefing on Saturday, Kieswetter said the performance outcome South Africans are seeing now is a result of institutional strength, not only individual stewardship.
“By our own standards, we will tell you we still have a long way to go. The transition is an important and necessary one that will not disrupt the institution,” Kieswetter said.
Makhubu thanked Ramaphosa for believing in him to take SARS to the next phase.
“SARS effectively funds our democracy. I will build on what’s been done in the last seven years under Commissioner Kieswetter. SARS is a special organisation that needs to be protected.
“SARS will continue to focus on what Commissioner Kieswetter implemented. We will continue to implement our modernisation program. We will continue to fight the illicit economy,” he said.
