Two KZN sergeants in court for alleged extortion
DURBAN – Two KwaZulu-Natal sergeants are expected to appear in the Ntuzuma magistrate’s court on Monday for alleged extortion.
The sergeants were arrested on Friday by Anti-Corruption Unit officers in the province for allegedly extorting money from those running illegal shebeens and selling illicit cigarettes in the Amaoti area in Durban’s Inanda.
They face four counts of extortion, with the possibility of more charges being added.
The two allegedly approached their victims and presented themselves as police officers before demanding money in exchange for not arresting them.
On 14 January, angry residents in the area cornered the officers and took them to a satellite police station in the area.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said that for police to effectively fight crime, they should first clean themselves.
“There are a few individuals who are tarnishing the name of the police, and we must deal with them from within and get rid of them. We cannot have police who are in cahoots with criminals,” said Mkhwanazi.
