Watch As 325 People gets arrested in Pretoria Raid
The continued efforts of a multidisciplinary law enforcement team in Tshwane led to the arrest of 325 suspects during #OperationShanela, which was conducted in the Pretoria North and Akasia policing areas this past weekend.
The operation was once again spearheaded by the Tshwane District Commissioner, Major-General Samuel Thine, and included integrated resources from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD), the Department of Home Affairs, and local Community Policing Forums (CPF).
Detectives executed the first phase of the operation on Friday evening through intensive suspect-tracing operations, which resulted in the arrest of 241 suspects by Saturday morning.
Several suspects were apprehended for various offences, including,
1 suspect for murder,
5 suspects for attempted murder,
6 suspects for armed robbery,
11 suspects for rape and
78 suspects for gender-based violence-related offences.
The second phase of the operation was conducted on Saturday evening by uniformed members to enhance visible Policing and public safety and to ensure legislative compliance.
Three operational teams were deployed and conducted a roadblock, stop-and-search actions, and targeted patrols in identified areas.
A total of 469 individuals and 252 vehicles were searched during the operation.
Twenty-six motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, while 14 AARTO infringement notices, amounting to R9 750, were issued.
In addition, 43 undocumented foreign nationals were detained. Immigration authorities are currently processing them for deportation.
The operation also targeted the illegal sale and consumption of alcohol. Fourteen liquor outlets were inspected, with two establishments closed and fined for non-compliance. Liquor amounting to 64 070 ml was confiscated during the inspections.
Twelve individuals were also fined for drinking in public.
Furthermore, 21 patrols were conducted in identified hotspots, which led to the arrest of two suspects for drug dealing after they were found in possession of illegal drugs. One additional suspect was arrested and charged for contravention of the Medicines Act after being found in possession of unauthorised tablets.
Major-General Samuel Thine thanked the members for their dedication and commitment during the execution of the operation.
