EMPD officers came under fire from suspected illegal miners in Germiston on Saturday while monitoring a known hazardous mine shaft near Johan Rissik and Main Reef Roads.

Police returned fire, forcing the suspects to flee into nearby shafts.

An unlicensed firearm and ammunition were recovered at the scene.

No injuries were reported, and investigations are ongoing.
