SAPS captain back in the dock over his alleged link to gang boss Nafiz Modack

South African Police Service (SAPS) captain Alfred Barker is due back in the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday to be cross-examined by the State about his relationship with alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack.Modack, who faces 122 charges related to allegedly operating a criminal enterprise, insists Barker was part of his plan to expose certain top cops and underworld figures who were working against him.

However, Barker denied this on Tuesday, saying he was purely investigating Modack’s allegations.

State prosecutor Blaine Lazarus questioned Barker about Modack insisting the captain gave him instructions on how to expose top cops Jeremy Vearey and the now-deceased Charl Kinnear.

Barker told the court that while investigating Modack’s allegations, he was never part of a plan to expose the senior police officers.Presiding Judge Robert Henney told Barker the evidence shows he was led astray.

“Facts were not given to you… facts were withheld… you were misled. You were never told about the other payments. He lets you open a docket.”

Barker will be back in court for the State to complete its cross-examination
