The dramatic video, which features a sports-style narration, shows the guard firing twice at point-blank range. Despite the alarming nature of the encounter, the robbers fled unharmed, escaping on a red truck and a motorcycle.
Analysis of the footage reveals that the guard’s shots did not seem to have any visible impact, which experts suggest could be due to the use of birdshot or blanks. Such non-lethal measures might have been implemented in accordance with Ecuador’s rising homicide rate, currently recorded at 44.4 per 100,000 people, thereby prompting supermarkets to employ armed guards for enhanced security.
