Convicted child abuser Iain Wares will return to the Simonstown Magistrates Court for his extradition hearing on Thursday.Authorities in the United Kingdom (UK) want him to face multiple charges of child sexual abuse.

Wares faces 90 charges related to the sexual and physical abuse of more than 60 boys in Scotland, dating back over 50 years, when he was a teacher there.

The former Cape Town and Scotland teacher is opposing his extradition to the UK, where some of his alleged victims want him to answer for his actions.

Wares has already been convicted in South Africa for indecently assaulting a former pupil at Rondebosch Boys’ Primary School. The 86-year-old was recently on trial in the Wynberg Magistrates Court for sexually assaulting the boy when he was 12 years old in 1988.

Wares denied the allegations, arguing that he did not remember the complainant and could not have committed the offence.

However, the court found him guilty and postponed sentencing to 13 May 2026.
