A tense standoff has unfolded between Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leaders and AfriForum members at the Kugompo City Magistrate’s Court following the sentencing of Julius Malema. After being found guilty of contravening the Firearms Control Act, Malema was sentenced to five years in prison. However, as he is appealing the sentence, the EFF leader will not be immediately incarcerated and has been released on warning.

Malema’s firearm discharge charges were laid by AfriForum after he fired a rifle in public.

While the standoff did not turn physical, EFF deputy secretary general Leigh-Ann Mathys referred to the three AfriForum men as terrorists.

“Y’all are terrorists and you don’t deserve to even be registered here in the country. Don’t look me and down patronise me!”But Afriforum’s Jacques Broodryk said the tense standoff shows what he says is the violent nature of the EFF.”Politicians are above the law. Just because you are politically connected and corrupt doesn’t mean that you can do what you want. This today, is a win.”

Malema is now beginning the process to appeal his sentence.
