KUGOMPO CITY – Angry residents rallied outside Silver Crown Old-Age Home in KuGompo City on Friday over allegations of mistreatment at the frail care facility.

The facility serves just 36 residents.

But, reports have surfaced that some of the food served to the elderly is not suitable for human consumption.

An activist said severe food rationing at this and other old-age homes in the city had been ongoing for years.

The Eastern Cape’s Department of Social Development said the claims against Silver Crown are untrue.

Their own investigation, they add, found the allegations to be unfounded.

Mpumzi Zuzile, spokesperson for the Social Development MEC, said the department has about 1,200 service providers assisting at it’s facilities.

He added that, although the department faces challenges, they welcome help from non-profit organisations eager to support those in need.
