A Western Cape police colonel, Makhosandile Makara

A Western Cape police colonel, Makhosandile Makara (45), accused of raping and sexually assaulting a 44-year-old subordinate in May 2025, was granted R5,000 bail by the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.

He is barred from contacting the complainant.

The case is postponed to 27 May 2026.

IPID says 116 rape cases were reported by end March, with 65 referred for prosecution and sentences ranging from 8 to 25 years in concluded cases.
