KUGOMPO CITY – Lobby group AfriForum says if EFF leader Julius Malema does not receive a long jail sentence for his firearm discharge case, it would be a “final nail” in the faith people have in the justice system.

Pre-sentencing proceedings in Malema’s gun trial are expected to continue in Kugumpo City in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday.

Despite numerous delays in the trial, AfriForum said it was confident that the matter will be finalised this week.

Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum community safety spokesperson said they were optimistic that the court will hand down a fair and serious sentence, as the State pushes for a 15-year minimum term.

“We think the magistrate has handled the matter in a fair way so far. We do believe that the sentence will be fair. If not, that would send a big question mark and red flags about the proceedings of the court and the judiciary itself,” said Broodryk.

“We have seen interference in multiple other cases where Malema is involved. That would be very worrying and quite possibly the final nail of faith that people still do have left in the judiciary but we’re optimistic,” he added.
