The Pinetown Magistrates Court has heard that member of Parliament (MP) Fadiel Adams disobeyed prison orders while on remand at Westville Prison. The leader of the National Coloured Congress (NCC) and MP is facing charges of alleged interference in the case involving the murdered African National Congress (ANC) councillor, Sindiso Magaqa.

Adams returned to the Pinetown Magistrates Court on Wednesday to apply for bail, a move the State is currently opposing.

When proceedings resumed on Wednesday, a change in Adams’ legal team was placed on record.

The MP is now represented by a former senior State prosecutor, Advocate Yuri Gangai.

He intended to secure bail in the Schedule 1 offence matter.

However, the State is not in support of his release, informing the court that he not only misled authorities during his visits to Westville Prison last year, but also failed to adhere to prison rules.

State prosecutor Advocate Nokulunga Ngcobo said when Adams was told to leave his phones behind as per visitor rules, he refused on multiple occasions.

“In the two visits there on the 20th and the 24th of January 2025, he conducted an interview with Sibusiso Ncengwa. Once more, he insisted going into the prison with his cellular phones as part of his parliamentary duties.”The State further alleges that the circulation of videos he recorded compromised their investigations into the Magaqa case.

Proceedings are continuing in the Pinetown Magistrates Court.
