Three suspected kidnappers have been arrested following a high-level intelligence-driven operation in Johannesburg after a businessman was abducted during an armed robbery at a butchery in Norwood.

The armed robbery and kidnapping took place on Tuesday, 6 May 2026.

The victim was later freed in the early hours of Wednesday morning, after which law enforcement agencies intensified efforts to track down those responsible.

A joint operation involving SAPS Gauteng TRT, the SAPS DPC Tracking Team, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations and Tracker Connect led investigators to Soweto, where a Toyota Etios sedan linked to the crime was identified.

Officers moved in and stopped the vehicle as part of a coordinated tactical operation.

Three suspects jumped out and attempted to flee on foot, but were swiftly cornered and arrested by members on the ground.

Police confirmed that the Toyota Etios was the same vehicle allegedly used during the kidnapping and armed robbery in Norwood.

Further intelligence led teams to a residential property in Yeoville linked to one of the suspects.

During the raid, officers recovered the kidnapped victim’s cellphone, an unlicensed firearm with ammunition, false registration plates and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Investigators are also probing possible links between the arrested suspects and a separate business robbery that took place in Booysens on 6 May 2026.

Police say further investigations are underway to determine whether the trio may be connected to additional kidnappings, armed robberies and organised criminal activities operating across Johannesburg.
