Two residents were killed and another was injured during a shootout at the corner of Kiaat and Jakkalsvleilaan streets in Bonteheuwel on Wednesday evening.

Police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana said officers were driving past the area when they noticed the shooting and immediately pursued a silver Toyota Etios carrying suspects, who allegedly opened fire on the victims.

Police said investigations into two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder are underway.

“A 22-year-old male victim sustained injuries on his body and was rushed to the nearest medical facility, whilst the other two male victims, aged 29 and 38, who were declared deceased on the crime scene, sustained injuries in their upper and lower bodies.”

Police have appealed to the public for assistance in tracing the suspects, who fled the scene.

“After a lengthy chase, they found the car abandoned in another street and the suspects had fled on foot. Upon searching the car, they found out that the car was carjacked in Athlone and inside it, they found a 9mm pistol that was also stolen in Athlone.”
